Imprint Training Course
Greatwood 30 October 2008
On 30 October Greatwood very kindly hosted a farriers’ continuing professional development course run by Imprint Equine Foot Care at their excellent facilities at Greatwood at Rainscombe Hill Farm, Marlborough. Ten farriers gathered to work on thoroughbred horses’ feet, deal with various hoof problems and learn new farriery techniques. The day consisted initially of a lecture in the classroom/conference room led by Dean Bland DipWCF Hons who went through the Imprint Sport Shoe fitting procedure. There were then discussions before Andrew Poynton FWCF performed a demonstration on one of the Greatwood horses. Then throughout the day the farriers worked together in pairs and had ongoing coaching in these procedures. Before each horse was shod it was assessed for its individual gait and any peculiarities of gait and checked for lameness before deciding on a specific shoeing strategy for that horse. Foot balance and trimming were then addressed and then the shoes were fitted. The practical coaching sessions went on throughout the day and the newly fitted kitchen was made full use of. Food was provided which was excellent.
The facilities at Greatwood were ideal, having plenty of candidates on-hand: light-footed thoroughbreds that needed a little bit of help. The classroom facility was excellent. We are most grateful to Helen and the staff at Greatwood for providing this opportunity. We are pleased to be associated with the work that goes on there and that we can both work together to promote and improve the lot of the thoroughbred and in particular their limbs and feet in this instance. The farriers came from quite a wide area across the south of England and it is anticipated that similar courses will be run periodically at Greatwood. Sometimes there will be veterinary surgeons also attending to work with the farriers on these courses. Imprint Sport plastic horseshoes are fitted to horses that are performing high level sport that want to have great advantages over and above steel nailed-on shoes and where nailing on shoes poses a problem to many light-footed thoroughbreds that struggle with retaining shoes and maintaining soundness. This technology is catching on and being used in high-level sport.
